Home Equity Lending Market

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve recently held public hearings on the home equity lending market. CSBS Assistant Vice President Catherine Woody interviews Steven L. Antonakes, Commissioner of Banks for the Massachusetts Division of Banks, to get the state system view of the residential mortgage industry.

Mr. Antonakes was appointed Commissioner of Banks for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Governor Mitt Romney in December 2003. Mr. Antonakes oversees over 270 state-chartered banks and credit unions holding total combined assets of approximately $240 billion. In addition, his agency licenses and examines over 5,000 non-bank financial entities, including mortgage lenders and brokers, check cashers, small loan companies, finance companies, and collection agencies.
